Numbering is an important, perhaps understated, element of a good SOP format. In the first instance numbers are applied to:
groups / blocks of instructions
individual instructions / steps
symbols relating to supporting information
As the procedure evolves, numbers may be used to link items of information, for example:

repeat from step 2
repeat steps 3-5
check steps 1.3-1.6, 2.4

Why is This Important?
